In this article offered by Proteclight, we review Peli™ tactical flashlights, what they are, their features and what they can be used for.

Peli™ tactical flashlights were specifically designed for lighting law enforcement, police, gendarmerie and military response areas. Ultra compact, lightweight and rugged, the tactical flashlights are easily maneuverable and space saving. They are ideal to accompany security professionals in their interventions.

What are the characteristics of a tactical flashlight?

What is the difference between a tactical flashlight and a traditional flashlight? Peli™ tactical flashlights are smaller, lighter, brighter and more durable than a regular flashlight.

  • HIGH LIGHT OUTPUT

The most important feature of a tactical flashlight is powerful brightness. Tactical lights are designed for law enforcement. Therefore, they must be bright enough to dazzle a potential attacker in order to defend themselves. Their brightness can reach up to 1219 lumens.

  • FLEXIBILITY: ACTIVATION MODES / LIGHTING MODES / PROGRAMMING

Peli™ tactical flashlights typically have two modes of switch activation: a momentary activation mode, meaning the user must be able to press the button lightly to turn the flashlight on, and then release the switch to turn it off; and a constant activation mode, which involves pressing the switch fully until it clicks and the flashlight stays on once the switch is released.

Peli™ tactical flashlights are also unique in that they have multiple lighting modes: high, medium, low and strobe.

The strobe mode is specific to tactical flashlights. It was designed so that law enforcement can use it to momentarily disorient or blind an aggressor and give them time to take action to subdue the aggressor. This is because the rapid switching on and off of light causes a person or object in motion to appear out of sync, and it can take some time for the brain to adjust. This phenomenon is also known as the Bucha effect or flicker dizziness. This gives the user of the lamp time to take a self-defense measure.

The strong mode, given the high light output of tactical lights, can have a flash blindness effect. The light output of tactical lights in high mode sometimes reaches over 1,000 lumens. Shining one of these lights into an attacker's eyes causes a moment of temporary blindness and is enough to blind or disorient the attacker considerably to help the user escape or subdue the attacker. The high mode is also used for night searches as it can illuminate up to hundreds of meters away.

The low mode of the tactical flashlights offers a longer range and is ideal for identity checks without blinding the person being checked.

Some models of Peli™ tactical flashlights are programmable to choose the order of lighting modes. This allows you to customize its operation to the user's needs.

  • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN

Peli™ tactical flashlights are generally smaller and lighter than a typical flashlight. In fact, they are designed to be used:

  • One-handed
  • On the belt without encumbering the user
  • In conjunction with a weapon.

  • EASY OPERATION

A tactical flashlight must be easily found and deployable by the user in high stress situations or in the dark for the quickest possible response.

Most Peli™ tactical flashlights are equipped with a rear switch. This makes it easy to distinguish between the two ends of the flashlight so you can quickly know how to hold it, where to turn it on, and where to aim the light.

  • LONG BATTERY LIFE

Tactical flashlights are designed to be used by law enforcement, so they must have a long battery life so they don't go out in the middle of an operation. They have a battery life indicator to anticipate the recharging of the battery and they are rechargeable, most by USB cable to be recharged anywhere. Their batteries can also be replaced by a type AAA battery with an adapter if necessary.

  • TOUGH

Tactical flashlights need to be rugged. As mentioned several times before, tactical flashlights are designed for professional use and therefore must be able to withstand the harsh conditions in the field. Peli™ tactical flashlights can withstand shock and weather with their high-strength, impact-resistant aluminum bodies, anti-glare tempered glass lenses and Index of Protection.

Tactical flashlights must be able to be used for self-defense if the situation arises. Therefore, these flashlights typically have a harder end and a distinctive serrated edge to strike a threatening assailant if needed. Peli™ or Proteclight in no way advocates violence, but sometimes threats must be neutralized by any means necessary.

What can a tactical flashlight be used for?

Tactical flashlights can be used for:

  • LIGHTING

Tactical flashlights were originally designed to illuminate dark places. A flashlight, as bright and powerful as a Peli™ tactical flashlight, can also be used as a simple deterrent. If you arrive home late at night, park on a dimly lit street, or walk to your car in a dark parking lot and feel unsafe, using a Peli™ tactical flashlight to light your way may be enough to keep an attacker away.

  • SELF-DEFENSE

As we've mentioned several times before, tactical flashlights are designed for law enforcement, security and military professionals. Therefore, a tactical flashlight can be used in a number of ways for self-defense: to blind and subdue an opponent, or in extreme situations, to strike and incapacitate a threatening assailant.

There are also other less conventional uses of tactical flashlights such as:

  • USE WITH A FIREARM

Peli™ tactical flashlights can be used by law enforcement in conjunction with a firearm. This is one of the main reasons why tactical flashlights were developed for law enforcement and the military. Their high light output and lightweight design make them ideal for illuminating a dark area with one hand, while holding a firearm in the other.

  • TO BREAK GLASS

Another use for a Peli™ tactical torch is to break a pane of glass. The key is to apply strong pressure to a very small portion of the glass. Pressure glass breaking tools were originally designed for law enforcement to break a car's window or windshield and bring the occupant to safety. The serrated bezel surrounding the bulb and the extremely hard exterior of a tactical lamp make it an ideal tool for breaking glass.

  • TO START A FIRE

Although Peli™ tactical lights were not designed for this purpose, in survival situations, a tactical light with high light output can be used as a tool to start a fire. There are various techniques for doing this. One is to break the light to expose the filament in the bulb. Adding flammable materials like wood to the filament can start a fire. A second technique is to catch the sunlight on the bulb of the lamp and reflect it off a pile of wood or other flammable materials. Finally, the easiest way would be to simply turn on the flashlight at the highest power setting, focus the beam and shine it as close to flammable material as possible.

We do not recommend this use; however, since these flashlights are designed for professionals such as the military, they can be used in survival situations.

  • TO SIGNAL FOR HELP

In another survival scenario, a Peli™ tactical flashlight can be used to signal for help. Imagine you are in a situation where no amount of shouting or hand waving is going to get anyone's attention. Your best bet in this case is to use some sort of visual signal that can be seen from a distance. Given its super bright beam of light, as well as the strobe setting, a tactical flashlight is ideal for signaling for help. Imagine being lost on a hike and needing someone to find you, or your car broke down on a dark country road and you need to signal your location to another car for help; a tactical flashlight is a great way to signal for help.
